Have You Visited the New Avid Reader Active Bookstore?

Owner says business is brisk, plans to expand stock

Since The Avid Reader Active's at 605 Second Street on June 1, owner Alzada Knickerbocker said business has been going well. She said that new customers are discovering the store everyday.

An expansion of the original The Avid Reader, The Avid Reader Active, is located down the street from the first store.

“We’re adding things all the time,” she said. “I’ve had a chance to expand the things that I feel comfortable with [like] books, while at the same time it’s been liberating to be able to bring in more stock, such as cards.”

Knickerbocker said it’s been fun to venture into new territory with the cards and the toy and game section. The store carries cards by local artists.

“It’s gratifying as an owner to see customers responding to something that you think will work,” she said. “It’s also a beautiful store. You don’t know aesthetically how an idea will work out, but when you see it come to life in 3-D it’s gratifying.”

Knickerbocker said the Active Reader still doesn’t have the volume of inventory that the original location does, but that she anticipates it will.

“The original store is still the anchor, but the new location is moving up,” she said.
