Livestrong Challenge Cycling Event Comes to Davis June 23 & 24

On Saturday and Sunday June 23 and 24 the Livestrong Challenge Davis activities will be focused on downtown’s Central Park. It is estimated that up to 2,000 riders will depart early Sunday morning June 24 to ride one of 3 professionally supported fundraising rides of 20, 65 or 100 miles.

This ride is one of the premiere bicycling events in the United States and one of only three Livestrong Challenge bicycling events nationwide in 2012. The funds that are raised through rider pledges, fund-raising and sponsorships are distributed by the Livestrong Foundation for cancer research, prevention, early detection and control programs. During last year’s event in Davis, 1,500 dedicated participants raised over $950,000 for the fight against cancer.

An integral part of the event is a free-to-the-public Livestrong Challenge Village on the Central Park “Green” featuring many health-related and event sponsor displays. The Village will be open on Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the registration tent on the corner of B and 5th Streets will issue participant packets.  The Davis Farmer’s Market will operate during its regular hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.

The free Livestrong Village booths will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 for the public.  Registered Livestrong Challenge bicycle riders will enjoy post-race food and refreshments at Central Park.  All three of the bicycle course routes will close at 4:00 p.m.
