General Strike at UC Davis Today

Do you believe striking is an effective way to make changes in education?

UC Davis will be shut down today, at least for some.

A General Strike was planned for Monday, Nov. 28 and will take place throughout today. Many students and faculty members will not attend classes or partake in their normal academic schedule. Most of them will instead participate in a series of Occupy-related workshops that will last from morning to night.

Events will take place in the quad and on other sites across campus. The full schedule can be found at the Bicycle Barricade or in the image that accompanies this article. Here’s a brief sampling:

  • Hate Crime Action Planning – 8:30 p.m.

The General Strike comes in the wake of the UC Davis , which has gained international media .There are now many tents on the quad, as well as a large dome structure. The crowd thinned out over Thanksgiving break, but the camp has maintained a strong presence.

Also today, UC Davis is one of four campuses hosting a regents meeting beginning at 9 a.m. at the . Tuition increases are not on the agenda. Audio will be streamed live and 15 minutes will be allotted for public comments. Here is the agenda

Some critics have argued that striking and skipping class are not positive ways to effect change in education, but supporters feel that it makes a clear and swift statement.
