Last Chance: Hurry Up and File Your Taxes!

I finally filed mine this week. Have you?

Back in January, right after my wife and I received our W-2 forms, I sat down and began filing our taxes online. I put on some quiet music to help me concentrate, poured myself a glass of wine, and I started plugging in numbers.

After I was about three-fourths done, I ran into a couple of questions about filing jointly (I got married in 2011) and about my student loans. Having hit that wall, I shelved my taxes and moved on with my busy life. Next thing I knew, it was April 11, and the tax deadline was fast approaching.

That same night, I repeated the routine mentioned above (music and wine, both of which soothe the tax-filing soul). Having found the answers to my questions, my wife and I finished up the process in a little over an hour.

The purpose of that story is this: If you haven’t done your taxes yet, now is the time. They’re due on April 17. It might seem daunting, but it's not too bad if you just get started.

If you plan on mailing them in, be ready for a rowdy scene at the post office that day. If you’re doing them online, get started today, because you’re sure to have a few questions that need answering before April 17.

If you have questions, check out the IRS website. I filed my taxes using TurboTax, but you can consider using one of these local spots if that better suits your needs.
