Photos From the Occupation (Updated)

Round-the-clock occupation of in Davis has begun. Help tell the story by uploading photos to this gallery. 

After in which the attendees worked to shape the movement, they met in the park at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with plans of remaining there for the indefinite future.

This gallery will document the entirety of that occupation. You can add your own photos by clicking the link under the image on the right. It’s simple, and it’s a good way for the community to have a constant window into the movement. Add captions to give the photos context and meaning. 

Larger groups will gather at the park during the day, while smaller crews will maintain occupation throughout the night. They’ll lead activities at the park and sometimes march to the corporate banks downtown, where they will demonstrate. They did that on Saturday, as you can see in the gallery.

Camping is technically illegal in the park, based on this ordinance: Camping is defined as erecting a tent or shelter, or arranging bedding, or both, for the purpose of, or in such a way as will permit remaining overnight. (Ord. 1011 § 2; Ord. 1877 § 1)

Lt. Paul Doroshov said the department has discretion to enforce any ordinance, and that the main goal is to . Occupy Davis has, to this end, made a very deliberate point of keeping the movement peaceful. 

It will be worth watching how they approach the camping ordinance as evenings begin to cool down. This was posted on their Facebook wall the first evening: 

A Davis Police cruiser swung by and gave us a wave. We waved back. It's a remarkably pleasant night. We prepared tea, set up a little swing and talked well into the night. More and more people showed up as the night went on. A lot of love from our fellow Davisites as they passed - quick little toots of approval from horns, waves, and encouragement from pedestrians. A very positive, wonderful experience. Once in a lifetime. I'll be camping out again tomorrow night.

Occupy Davis makes clear on their website that they are not protesting the farmers market or the city of Davis. They’re protesting “widespread social and economic inequalities and injustices.”
