Tim Kerbabaz: Talon Entertainment is an umbrella for a live sound and DJ collective that I started with my friend Aaron Cooper. I do sound and Aaron DJ's.

Aaron Cooper: We both work separately in our respective fields, but Talon helps us serve a wider range of customers and gives us both an advantage.

How did Talon Entertainment get started?

Aaron: I used to work for a DJ company in my home town, and when I came to UC Davis, I became a radio DJ for KDVS, the UC Davis radio station. Tim and I met a couple of years ago. He managed and did sound for a band I was in. After the band broke up, Tim and I were left with Tim's sound system and my DJ skills.

Tim: I've done live sound since middle school. I worked for the ASUCD Entertainment Council at UC Davis for my first two years of college, and now work with the UC Davis Audio/Visual department. I love doing sound, and I've always wanted to have my own sound equipment to play with. I bought a bunch of gear when I was doing sound for Retro$pekt, and after they broke up, I decided that it was time to take the plunge and go out on my own. I knew that a lot of the events I do sound for had a need for a DJ, so I called Aaron to discuss how we could work together.

What kind of jobs do you usually do?

Aaron: So far, despite the fact that we're in a college town, we've mainly done weddings and private parties. The company I used to work for specialized in Bar Mitzvas, so I still do those here and there. I also work with campus groups all the time.

Tim: I did sound for the Davis International Festival sponsored by the  in October, and I did sound for a concert at the UC Davis Tri-Coops before I started working with Aaron.

Do you think Davis is a good town for this kind of business? Why?

Tim: Absolutely! Davis has a tight knit community, which makes getting referrals easier. DavisWiki has already proved invaluable for our business. We love to work with Davis residents, as well as UC Davis Students and community members.

Aaron: UC Davis has provided us with tremendous opportunities - Tim and I met at UC Davis, and we try to give back to the UCD community. We offer discounted rates to UC Davis Student groups, because we know firsthand what being a student is like.

What are your favorite types of jobs?

Tim: Honestly the client matters more than the event. We've been extremely fortunate to work with some great people putting on amazing events, and I've enjoyed all of them. That said, I love doing sound for a live band. It is way more engaging for me than a dance party or a corporate event.

Aaron: I agree: I'd rather work with a client that's enjoying their event and gives us constructive feedback along the way so I can make the event better for them than play a set that's fun for me, but doesn't keep the guests happy. That said, I generally enjoy performances because I enjoy the technical challenge of working with (and often playing alongside) a live performer.
