UC Berkeley’s Chancellor announced today that he will step down at he end of the year. The response has been mixed: Some have praised Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s “dedication and service,” while some student activists have celebrated his exit as a .

Back in November of 2011 – just one week before -- UC Berkeley Police had a . Since then, Chancellors Birgeneau and Linda Katehi have come under plenty of fire.

Here’s a bit from Birgeneau’s letter: “I am deeply grateful to have been entrusted with the profound responsibility of leading this great institution and its outstanding faculty, staff and students through one of the most challenging periods in its 144-year history.”

UC President Mark Yudof said Birgeneau “has proven to be a passionate, dedicated and effective steward of the world’s greatest public university. He has been an ardent champion of academic excellence, as well as an unwavering advocate for the underdog."

Meanwhile, student activist group BAMN is celebrating his resignation as a victory, saying that he "had to go" after last November's incidents.

A report on the UC Davis pepper spraying was scheduled to be released last week, but a judge after the union that represents the police requested a court order to halt public disclosure of the report.
