US Bank Misdemeanor Charges: Q&A With Yolo DA's Office

After blocking the US Bank on campus, 12 people are being booked on misdemeanor charges by the Yolo County District Attorney's Office.

12 protesters who branch on campus were booked on misdemeanor charges last week. The protests were part of an effort to get US Bank off campus, which is eventually what happened.

These 12 protesters were not the only individuals who participated in the bank blockade, but they are the only ones who will be . I spoke with Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral on Friday about some details surrounding the charges:

Why these 12 and not the others?

There was only a handful more that police were able to identify. We made the decision based on those people that were most involved in the activity.

How did you go about identifying?

I don’t know that I can answer directly. [Police] looked at university pictures, DMV, and some were known to the officers already from other incidents.

Why book these students for obstructing public space , but not the ones who were pepper sprayed?

They are completely different incidents involving completely different facts. These actions involved much more activity by the individuals who were committing the crime than the pepper spray. There are some legal distinctions between the two incidents.

Were there any plainclothes officers involved in the investigation?

No, not that I’m aware of.

Is the investigation complete?

Yes, the investigation is complete.

Was UC Davis administration involved in the investigation?

I believe the police did (use the campus as a resource).

What will happen next for the 12 of them?

They have up until April 27 to show up voluntarily to be booked on charges. They come in on the 27th to be arraigned. I assume we may very well set trial dates. I assume we’ll be litigating some o the issues before the trial starts, but that’s really up to them and their council.

Let us know what you think of the charges below.
