Video: 1,000 Bottle-Brick Benches for Peace
Over 80 pounds of waste were diverted from landfills in the form of bottle bricks for this bench project.
This is not just a bench; it's a benchmark in zero-waste ingenuity. Over 80 pounds of waste were diverted from landfills in the form of bottle bricks, otherwise known as portable landfill devices.
As you can see in the video above, you take a plastic bottle and continue to fill it with plastic trash until it becomes as solid as a brick.
Anyone in Davis can start integrating this practice into their daily lives, says Brennan Blazer Bird, UC Davis alum and former Domes resident. In turn, they can contribute to the Sustainable Learning and Living Community at the Domes.
"I'm very passionate about challenging this illusion of waste," he says. "Waste is an illusion, a resource in the wrong place."
Brennan has undertaken this project in hopes that it will inspire others around the world to also shift their perspective on waste, and actually strengthen community through innovative sustainable projects.
This bench in Davis is his first in the 1,000 Bottle Brick Benches for Peace.
