Maybe it's because they treat their team members terribly. Or maybe it's because they have refused Read Moretheir team members pay raises for 2 years now (using the opening of Whole Foods as a reason for the initial freeze, but never lifting said freeze even though they claim that Whole Foods did not hurt them financially). Take the time and stop and talk to their team members, you will find that most of them are not happy because of how the co-op is poorly run, specifically by upper management. And as far as overcoming Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, they may have withstood it financially, but they hurt their reputation by being unprofessional and poor sports by putting down those establishments publicly. If you don't believe me check out their public board meeting notes. I expect more from a cooperative. I was a die hard shopper at the Davis Co-Op until I started to learn how unhappy their team members were and how incredibly threatened they were by the opening of Whole Foods. So much so that they refer to them as the "enemy". I know this because I was a super worker there the summer before Whole Foods opened. And honestly, I was embarrassed by their behavior.

With Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Farmers Market ... maybe the CO-OP has outlived its usefulness.

There is not really much we can do. I was at the board meeting tonight. The board was not willing Read Moreto discuss or comment on the firing. This is legalese for " we are going to ask our lawyer what we can say". One past board member implied that this was ongoing issue that the board had tried to resolve with Eric for a while. Sandy, Eric's wife stated categorically that neither she nor Eric were aware of any such communication. But don't worry. It doesn't matter. It's just business....and I'm taking mine to whole foods and trader joes. They don't pretend to be a cooperative.

Anne, thanks for your concern. For years I was a nurse and at one point frequently worked inRead MoreHighlan d Hospital ER (Alameda CO's hospital). I've seen lots of shot, stabbed and beaten people and worked hospice. The sad aspect was that a person was so defeated and desperate that he felt death was a better choice than life. The horrible part of all this was the behavior of the police and the City Council (except Mr. Lee). The COPS went to great lengths to silence it all. We will be the next victims of this fascist regime.

You are expecting Police Officers to know in advance that the person with two guns in front ofRead Moretheir station means them no harm. It is sad this person was a frequent contact the Officers all seemed to know, but for them to assume that he was there only intending to hurt himself would have been foolish. There are documented cases of suicidal persons attacking Police Officers both in and outside of Police Stations, killing or seriously injuring Officers and civilian personnel before taking their own lives. There are also documented cases of persons setting themselves up as a bomb and then killing themselves, or pretending to, then attacking first responders rushing in to help, or when first responders roll them over or move them the device activates and kills or maims them. The bottom line here is the Police responded as best they could to a very real threat posed by a known mentally unstable individual who brought weapons and the very real possibility of death or injury to anyone they encountered. Any trauma doctor will tell you that there is no need to rush treatment to soneone who has just shot themselves on purpose. They usually do a pretty effective job with one shot, and will often later finish the job if they failed the first time. Trying to rationalize an irrational act by a suicidal person is a huge waste of your time. They are ill. Also, one does not need two guns to kill just themselves. You are responding appropriately to your own emotions after viewing a very stressful traumatic event. You should seek treatment as you appear to be experiencing elements of PTSD and counseling may help you achieve some closure to this event. Trying to villify Police for responding to a very real and potentially ongoing threat to their lives and safety is ignorance personified. I commend the Davis Police Department for protecting the privacy of the poor sick soul by not releasing private medical information about them to the press, as suicide is not a crime and does not therefore need to be blasted all over the news. To suggest this compassionate act in deference to the victim's family is in any way some sort of "cover up" is ludicrous. Please seek help to aid you in processing this obviously disturbing event in your life.
