Where Will You Watch the Solar Eclipse Today?

The eclipse starts around 5:16 p.m. Peak viewing time is 6:33 p.m. Don't risk eye damage: Never look straight at the sun.

With a big event like the annular solar eclipse coming up Sunday, we'd like to know where you'll be going to view the event. The full eclipse won't be visible in Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area, but you will be able to see it partially. So, where will you be going to watch? Let us know below! Here are some safe-viewing tips form the Explorit Science Center:  Never look at the sun or a solar eclipse with the naked eye or with any optical device, such as binoculars or a telescope - this will cause permanent damage to your eyes and even blindness. Only telescopes with special filters and proper placement of filters can be used to view the sun.  For more information regarding the Sunday, May 20 partial/annular eclipse, or meeting …

Today: Support Downtown Businesses (Because They Support Schools)

Today is Davis Merchants Appreciation Day.

Nina Gatewood Our Downtown Merchants have been very supportive of our school through generous auction donations.  Through this difficult economy, many are feeling the pinch (or worse) and could really benefit from our support in return.  To that end, we have declared this Sunday, 5/20 Downtown Davis Merchants Appreciation Day. Simply put, if you have shopping that can be done in downtown, we'd like to show our collective support for our downtown businesses through a flurry of Fairfield shoppers downtown on Sunday.  We'll kick the day off with a family picnic @ Central park @ noon for anyone who'd like to join their fairfield friends.  Need to pick up a birthday or anniversary gift?  Consider nestware, Teach Your Children or DeLuna's …

VIDEO: 5 Minutes of Fireworks in 43 Seconds

Celebrate Davis! ended with a five-minute fireworks show yesterday. Here's a sped-up version.

I shot this video on my GoPro camera while breaking down the Davis Patch booth at Celebrate Davis! yesteray. The event was great and the fireworks show was a nice way to end it.  The music in the video is something I recorded a couple of years ago using a guitar and some GarageBand loops. It's a bit scattered and crazy.   For more local videos:

Time Sure Flies: Celebrate Davis! was my First Day with Davis Patch Last Year

My first day of work was at Celebrate Davis! last year. It was a doozy.

I spent my first day of work as Davis Patch's editor chatting with people at the Chamber of Commerce's Celebrate Davis! event. My colleagues had gotten us a booth with hopes of reaching out to the community prior to the our launch. A full year has since passed, with Celebrate Davis! 2012 happening today from 4-9 p.m.  When I worked last year's event, I had just moved from San Francisco back to my parents’ house in Winters. My then-fiance was still in the city, finishing out her job. I came early to find us an apartment in Davis. I worked the booth with my boss and our salesperson. Thousands of people paraded by throughout the day, asking what “Davis Patch” was. The site wouldn’t launch for another month and a half and I hadn’t done a lick …
