VIDEO: Council Candidate Gets Dunked by Young Davisite

This kid won't be able to vote for many years. For now, he lets his arm do the talking.

Many local public figures were invited to participate in a dunk tank at Celebrate Davis! yesterday. Among them were the five city council candidates.  While I spent most of the day working the Davis Patch booth, I took a quick stroll around the park to snap some photos. I showed up at the dunk tank just in time to watch candidate Lucas Frerichs get dunked by a kid with an impressively accurate arm.   Here's our full City Council election guide. (This is the only story about dunk tanks, I promise). To follow the eletion:

Election Issues: Should the City Regulate Residential Wood Burning?

What restrictions, if any, on residential wood burning would you support, or how would you otherwise address this problem?

Here's our full City Council Election Guide. Share your thoughts below.  "Many Davis residents experience significant air quality problems in winter months due to nearby residential wood burning. Davis currently has no mandatory restrictions on wood burning unlike most Central Valley cities and the entire Bay Area. What restrictions, if any, on residential wood burning would you support, or how would you otherwise address this problem?" -Sierra Club Yolano Group Stephen Souza The problem is that many Davisites burn wood in old, dirty devices. Traditional fireplaces are so inefficient they don't heat a room unless they've been retrofitted with a wood or pellet insert. Swapping out older wood stoves for newer EPA Phase 2 fireplace inserts …

Election Issues: How Should the ConAgra Site be Developed?

How much should be residential and how much should be business? Should the development be a zero net-energy development?

Here's our full City Council Election Guide. Share your thoughts below.  "What percentage of the proposed Con-Agra development should be for residential vs. business use? Do you support a net zero energy development at the Con Agra site like the UC Davis West Villages development?" -Sierra Club Yolano Group Brett Lee Net zero energy? Yes, absolutely.  The year is 2012, not 1992.  The fact that the current proposal moving forward for this site is not even close is really tragic. No solar panels on the residential component? Really? Unbelievable. Stephen Souza The Con-Agra development should be close to a 3 to 1 residential use to business use. Yes I support the target of zero net energy use, meaning that all of the buildings make as much…

Election Issues: How To Handle Davis's Water Supply & Wastewater Issues?

Davis has big challenges ahead when it comes to water. Here's how each candidate plans to approach the issue, according to Sierra Club Yolano Group.

Here's our full City Council Election Guide.  Lucas Frerichs I believe that Davis/Yolo County needs a diversity of options when it comes to water supply.  Mark Twain famously quipped, “in California, whiskey is for drinkin’, and water is for fightin’.”  There is a long history  in California of outside interests coming in, and sucking out groundwater and sending it southward for both the needs of customers in the LA Basin, and for the “big Ag” interests in the San Joaquin Valley.  These interests don’t care about the well-being and future of Yolo County- they’re only interested in the water for their customers. It is important for us to prepare for our collective future, and to secure a stable source of surface water…the aquifer Davis …

Dan Wolk Makes Davis's 'First Ever' Council Campaign Music Video

Dan Wolk's campaign video was filmed and edited by the same guy who edited the "Davis State of Mind" video.

Dan Wolk added some humor to the city council campaign this week when he released what his website says is the "first ever Davis city council campaign music video!"  The video is a rendition of "The Davis Song," which was written by Heidi Bekebrede, with whom Wolk duets the song.  It was filmed and edited by Daniel Watts -- the man who edited the Davis State of Mind video that went viral last year. A clip of the song plays during the credits at the end.  What do you think of the video? Share below!

Wolk's campaign slogan is "A New Generation of Leadership." YouTube music videos definitely appeal to the the next generation, as far as demographics go.   more ›

Council Campaign Gets Ugly: Sue Greenwald Attack Mailer (PHOTO)

What do you think of the mailer? Did you receive it?

A strongly-worded campaign mailer landed in many Davisites' mailboxes this this week, instantly adding some controversy to the city council race.  The mailer, which references a 2010 confrontation between council candidate Sue Greenwald and former mayor Ruth Asmundson, claims to be in support of Councilmember Stephen Souza, but says it is "not authorized by any candidate for City Council or any candidate's controlled committee."  Souza condemned the mailer in the Davis Enterprise, calling it the "lowest, dirtiest stunt I can recall being smeared onto the politics of Davis."  The other candidates criticized the ad as well, making clear that they had no involvement in it.   The mailer was "Paid for by Citizens for Better Government in Davis …

Exactly. It's not even really about the candidates or the race itself. It's about he decision to dream up, design, print and mail this kind of content. I really am curious, though: These kinds of things have the ability to plant seeds in peoples' heads, ultimately having an effect on election day. Most people see this for what it is, but I'm sure some others are being swayed (whether it be …   more ›

PHOTOS: Community Members Meet the Council Candidates

The Davis Vanguard is looking for donations to help fund Saturday's event.

The Davis Vanguard held a meet-the-candidates event Saturday afternoon. They served up Mexican food for Cinco de Mayo and erected a bounce house for kids.  I chatted briefly with all of the candidates (except for Stephen Souza, who was not there while I was in attendance). It was an enjoyable setting, perfect for casual conversation with our future councilmembers.  There were also tons of people lining up at the nearby movie theater to catch the box-office hit "The Avengers." It looked like a few of them stopped by the meet-and-greet on their way.  The Vanguard is seeking donations to help pay for the event, which cost about $600. Donate here.  Navigate the photos above and feel free to add your own if you'd like.

The View From the Ron Paul Town Hall (PHOTOS)

I mingled amongst the masses at the Ron Paul rally at UC Davis and took these photos with my iPhone.

If you were at the rally, upload your own photos or vidoes above.  Quite honestly, if any other Republican presidential candidate were to have stopped by the UC Davis quad to give a campaign speech yesterday, there's little doubt in my mind that it would have been overshadowed by some form of protest.  We're talking about the same quad where non-violent students were pepper sprayed by campus police as the Occupy movement took hold last November, turning the location into a symbol and a gathering point.  To put it bluntly, the Occupy movement and the Republican Party don't exactly line up in agreement on many issues.   Ron Paul's stage was just a couple hundred feet from where Lt. Pike did his pepper spraying, and although there were …

Thanks, windwardtack. I just clarified that final bullet point, which was more a link to another story than an insertion of my opinion. You're right, though. It came off as such. I just rephrased and included the link to Paul's website. Appreciate the attention.   more ›
