Davis residents can receive free tax help at local centers

Davis households making less than $58,000 a year can receive help filing their taxes for free as part of the region’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program led by United Way California Capital Region.

Those interested can visit four Davis locations. Owendale Mutual Housing’s community room, 3023 Albany Avenue, will be open 5:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays Jan. 31-March 14, April 4 and April 11. New Harmony Mutual Housing’s community room, 3030 Cowell Boulevard, will be open 5-8 p.m. Mondays Jan. 27-March 10, April 7 and April 14. The Mary Stephens Library Branch, 315 East 14th Street, will be open 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays Feb. 1-March 15 and April 5. Yolo Family Resource Center’s Davis Family Resource Center, 441 B Street, will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday Feb. 1-April 15. Appointments are only required at the Yolo Family Resource Center and can be made by calling (530) 406-7221.

As part of the VITA program, United Way has created www.KeepYourTaxRefund.com, an online tool helping local residents save money this tax season.

“We want people to keep more money in their pockets and make our community stronger by taking advantage of tax credits,” said Stephanie McLemore Bray, United Way president and CEO. “This website is an easy and effective way to file your taxes and save your money for what matters most to you.”

KeepYourTaxRefund.com’s filing tool is free to individuals or households making less than $58,000 a year. For those making more, the cost is less than $50. The website, which is powered by H&R Block software, saves users an average of $200 in tax preparation fees. Users will need a valid email address and income forms, such as a W2, 1099, 1098, etc. Those who need in-person help can schedule an appointment through the website to meet with a VITA volunteer who will help file their taxes for free, if they qualify, or they can visit the Davis locations.

United Way also is seeking volunteers to distribute information about VITA. No prior tax law experience is necessary. Schedules and locations are flexible. For more information, contact United Way Volunteer Services at volunteer@uwccr.org or (916) 856-3983.
