GQ Magazine Cold-Calls Residents to Ask if They #YOLO

GQ Magazine can hardly contain its excitement over the discovery that a California county shares the name of Drake's popular catchphrase.

A hotel clerk and a tea shop employee don't live life according to rapper Drake's shark-jumping motto, but a YMCA employee does.

That's GQ Magazine found in a trio of cold-calls to Yolo County residents to ask if they live like "You Only Live Once."

"Did you know there's a place called Yolo? There is," GQ writer Lauren Bans writes in the tongue-in-cheek story. "It's a county in Northern California, with a population of 200,000."

The article contains transcripts of Bans' conversations with three Yolo County residents about their knowledge of the "You Only Live Once" acronym.

"Has Yolo County started the hashtag #YoloYOLO?," Bans asks a YMCA employee.

"I haven't seen that yet," the employee replies. "Patent it when you can."

West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon tweeted his disappointment that his city was omitted from the story.

And in case you think the amazement from pop-culture-obsessed youth giddily discovering Yolo County is new, it isn't.
