New Downtown Mural Will Celebrate Davis's Love For Bikes

You're invited to contribute to the mural.

By Liz Phinney

The Davis Art Center and Paint Bike Fun are collaborating to create a community mural in downtown Davis on the wall arches at the corner of 3rd and F Streets. The project is part of the Art Center’s 2013 Discovery Art Program, “Momentum: Art in Action, Creativity in Motion.”

Community members of all ages are invited to contribute to a “Bike Fun” mural that will celebrate all the ways we enjoy bikes and bike-riding in Davis. Lead artist Danielle Fodor is currently soliciting images both realistic and fantastic - from pictures of actual people and places to imaginary creatures whizzing along on bizarre contraptions.

How do you have fun on your bike? What is the most fun you can imagine while bike-riding? Fodor asks that you share your bike fun mural ideas in any form: drawings, collages, photos, poems, or just a few words. Send your bike fun art to paintbikefun@gmail.com or drop it off at the Davis Art Center at 1919 F Street before June 8. Artwork submitted will be displayed at the Davis Art Center in June, as well as in an online gallery, and it could even end up as part of the final mural!

You can take a more active part in the overall mural by attending a free mural design workshop at the Davis Art Center on June 15 from 10 am-12 pm. With Fodor’s guidance, participants will view the bike art submitted and work together to combine the contributed ideas into a single beautiful design. Even though there is no fee for this workshop, please call the Davis Art Center at 756-4100 to ensure a space. All ages are welcome. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a parent.

There will also be opportunities for artists age 5 and up to help paint the final mural on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in July, and the entire community will be invited to celebrate the mural’s completion at a downtown Bicycle Arts Festival on Saturday, August 17.

The Bike Fun mural project has been generously supported by the James Irvine Foundation, Genentech, the City of Davis Street Smarts program, and Davis Downtown.
