ACE Gets a New Shop

Store offers many of the same services more locally

The local Ace Hardware has expanded. Aggie Ace, the newest member to the Davis Ace store family, premiered at a soft opening on July 30 in North Davis.

This is Ace’s first branch in Davis to open outside downtown.

The new shop is located at 606 W. Covell Boulevard in the Anderson Plaza and houses the 4,000 square foot space that 49er Video formerly occupied until March of 2011. Ace owners decided to open this express store back in the spring.

Aggie Ace offers customers key-cutting and computerized color paint matching. Departments include hardware, plumbing, electrical, paint, garden tools and pesticides & fertilizers.

Carol MacDonald, executive coordinator of Ace Hardware in Davis, said the soft opening on July 30 served as a way to work out the store’s kinks. The grand opening celebration will be the weekend of Oct. 19-21, featuring events, three coupons and prizes such as $100 gift cards.

MacDonald said the store will function as a complimentary satellite store, providing services to the north and west parts of town, mainly for quick projects that just require running around the corner for supplies.

“It’s exciting to have a new addition,” she said. “We’ve seen some business with foot traffic too. Since there are apartments in the area, we hope to draw in students.”

She said she sent out a mailing a few weeks ago to let people know about the new opening.

Aggie Ace fills less space than the other branches. The main hardware store takes up 11,000 square feet, compared to Aggie Ace's square footage of less than 4,000.

MacDonald said several employees from the older four stores have transferred over to Aggie Ace, bring their talent from their work experience.

Ace originally went into business in Davis 90 years ago and was opened as the “Davis Lumber Company.” The land the present day Ace Hardware dwells on was first owned by Jerome C. Davis, the man whom the City of Davis was named after. The store is locally owned.

Aggie Ace is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Davis Ace Hardware is located at 815 3rd St., Garden & Pet at 830 4th St., the Rock Yard at 904 4th St. and Housewares at 240 G St.
