Poll: Do You Want a Whole Foods in Davis?

A Whole Foods may fill the space left by Borders. How does that make you feel?

It appears that Whole Foods has agreed to fill the vacancy left by Borders Books. Vote below and let us know if you favor the move.

The Bee ran a story today that said “multiple parties” were interested, because of the size of the store and the proximity to downtown.

They’re not yet certain when the conversion will happen. A pop-up Halloween store is in the space right now.

With the arrival of Whole Foods, the grocery scene in Davis looks to get a bit more crowded, especially for stores like the , and , all of which place extra emphasis on fresh, organic products, similar to Whole Foods.

Love to see Whole Foods in Davis. But is the former Border's space big enough?

There are at least 16 good reasons for not supporting/shopping Whole Foods listed in this article <michaelbluejay.com/misc/wholefoods.html>. Their CEO is a Libertarian climate change denier who opposes universal health care . . . plus Davis does not need another mega chain grocery store to cannilbalize the local grocery operators .

Great comment to see who runs the business and what their stands are re our ohr community issues- peoploe buy stock in companies that sell tobbaco and buy stocvk in other companies that take our jobs over seas that is where the people power is DO NOT buy stock in a company that acts in ways detrimental to Americans do you know what stock is in your 401 K/??? Really? Why? What do they offer that you can't find at the Co-op, 2- Nuggets, Trader Joe's, 2-Safeways, Save-Mart, Target, CVS, Rite-Aid, Farmer's Market and Westlake Market? Check the country of origin on their "organic" products . . . if you think China observes our organic growing/processing restrictions you are very uninformed.

I forgot the Grocery Outlet . . .

There are probably a lot of communities that would clearly benefit (in terns of health options) from a Whole Foods. It's a bit more questionable in Davis, where many options already exist. I wonder: Will a Whole Foods in Davis suffer because of the other options already available? Or will it struggle to take off, because the grocery market is so dense?

Another thought: That location may be small (for a Whole Foods), but it's so close to downtown compared to other grocery stores. Supply might be limited, but I imagine that's a tough location to compete with, although parking might be a major deterrent.

They are in a lousy location for a grocery store . . . too many barriers for shopping convenience and not enough residences in close proximity. Both Target and Trader Joe's are underwhelmed with their grocery sales . . . their target customer is already a loyal Co-op member . . . I don't see how WF survives other than on subsidies from their 300 other stores.

And the parking lot is not only limited for shoppers, but also for truck access for deliveries and trash pickup.

I'm personally very happy they are coming, and as far as my shopping goes there is substantial non-overlap with current stores. I will continue to patronize Nugget and the Co-op, but I welcome the 365 Brand grocery items (typically well-researched sources and manufacturing), MSC-certified fish, and fresh cut deli meats that are antibiotic-free/pastured—all of which no grocery in Davis offers. Also love the idea of another healthy carry-out food choice at the plaza area. I do hope they source local produce/meats for their prepared items though.

At first I thought, "What now? First the IRS is investigating the Tea Party and now the OddRead More Fellows and Soroptimist?" But then, after reading the article I realize that these are pretty serious allegations if proven to be true. I'm curious what specific "foster youth" organizations have benefitted from all of this fundraising. "Foster youth" is a pretty generic phrase and could refer to any number of organizations. With all of the non-profits I have worked with, the specific charity benefitting from their work was very clearly identified (and their 501c status was never in question).
