Well, I... walked around the corner
and I walked around the block
and I walked right into a donut shop...

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days, and the doughnut is no exception.
National Donut Day is Friday and in honor of their big day, doughnut shops across the nation—including some in the Sacramento area—will hand out free doughnuts to customers.
While it appears that doesn't have anything too special planned, it could be worth swinging by to observe the holiday anyway. Here are some other nearby locations offering free doughnuts:
, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is offering a sweet deal: All you have to do is show up, no purchase necessary, for a free doughnut of your choice (one per customer). The closest store for Sacramento-area residents is in , at 10317 Fairway Dr.
At in Elk Grove, owner Chiv Mey Wong said she'd be staying up late Thursday making extra doughnuts. The store will give away one small coffee and one free doughnut to each customer who comes in between 5 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday. (Nearby is not offering any deals, but it's worth a trip just to gawk at the .)

At in Fair Oaks, manager Sophie Finn said the store—which also sells other breakfast goodies like scones and apple fritters—wasn't offering any specials Friday. But employees always toss in an extra doughnut or pastry for anyone who buys 12, she said.
"It's super-busy on National Donut Day," said Finn. "I love it."
National Donut Day, always celebrated on the first Friday of June each year, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate the day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free donuts for a year, by entering a contest onits Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.
