Solar Compass Mural Dedication

As part of the 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception, the new Pence mural Solar Compass will be dedicated on Friday, November 8th, from 6:30-8 PM. Created by Sacramento muralist Anthony Padilla over two months, the mural spans the entire east wall of the Pence courtyard, serving as a vibrant part of the Gallery’s exterior renovations.

Anthony Padilla is an established muralist with over 40 murals to his credit, both locally and regionally. Using aerosol paint as his medium, he creates paintings that blend a heightened sense of fantasy with close observation of the natural world.  Solar Compass is part of the artist’s current interest in solar energy and our choices about renewable energy sources.  Giant bees feed on nectar from California poppies, creating honey, their own energy source, as a solitary couple talks below them.

The mural dedication includes a performance by Big Sticky Mess, who will play funk and jazz from 6:30-7:45 PM, with a break for comments by Board president Bill Roe at 7 PM.  Honey tasting and sales will be provided by Woodland’s Z Specialty Foods, mead wine and refreshments will be available outside on the Pence courtyard.  Visitors can take home part of the original mural design, by creating their own colorful, personalized button.

All are welcome, and donors to the mural will be recognized. The courtyard redesign was completely funded by individuals from the community, with major support from Bill & Nancy Roe, Jim & Sue Smith, and sixty other patrons. The 2nd Friday ArtAbout reception is always free, and current exhibits at the Pence will be open from 6-9 PM that night.
