CHP: Triple-Fatal Accident Caused When Moving Truck Hit Car

Two victims were from Sacramento, CHP officers said.

A moving truck crashed into a tree off eastbound I-80 near Davis Friday, killing three people and slowing traffic all the way to Dixon.

The Yolo County Coroner's Office has not yet identified the victims, but California Highway Patrol officers on the scene said two of them were from Sacramento.

The Richards Blvd ramps were closed briefly as CHP officers cleared the scene.

The Budget rental truck was traveling in the far-righthand lane just east of Davis when it sideswiped another car in the lane to the left, CHP Officer J. Patton told Davis Patch. It then overcorrected to the right, veered off the road and hit the tree, killing all three people inside.

β€œIt was a pretty straightforward crash. They tried to overcompensate after hitting the car and unfortunately ended up hitting the tree," Patton said.

Witnesses said the truck had swerved into the other car's lane, Patton reported. No one in the other car was injured, according to the CHP.

The empty moving truck was being towed from the scene and a stretch of Research Park Drive adjacent to the freeway remained closed as of about 2:00 p.m. Traffic was moving again on I-80, but slowly.

The KCRA report is incorrect when it says,"...the force of the crash threw part of the tree onto nearby Chiles Road, which was also closed." It is a portion of Research Park Drive that is closed.

Thanks for the correction, Sharon. Davis Patch editor Justin Cox is on the scene and will file an update soon. Did you see what happened? Or were you affected by the street closure?

I passed this today on my way to work, scary. Be careful commuting everyone.
Shelby Baldridge June 30, 2012 at 02:43 AM
...there were 4 accidents total on my afternoon commute today, this one, two others literally right by the budget crash only in the far left lane. One looked like a 3-car fender bender...the other was like 1/2 a mile ahead involving 2 cars. Then the other one was in sac, west bound on the tail end of the bridge. Looked pretty bad!

I am a Rental Agent for Budget Truck Rentals, and the gross vehicle weight on a 24' truck is over 12,000 lbs. While they only require a Class 'C' license to operate, they are akin to driving a semi to an in-experienced driver. This is the worse crash of one I have ever seen. My Prayers to the Families.

I passed by the scene about 7 minutes after the crash, when the second fire truck arrived at the scene. At first I thought it was a minor crash but then I remember seeing the entire cab gone, with the forward cargo compartment split into branched pieces and I remember gasping out loud cause it was such a horrifying sight. Sad to see this happen. My hearts to the families.

I am confused on the information they have given which has been three different stories. We were behind the rental truck for awhile and it was not weaving or swearving, they were driving normal. But they were in the far left hand lane at that time. We pulled off at the fruit stand so we did not see what happened after that until we got back on the freeway and saw the truck. There were no skid marks, I don't believe he hit his breaks, it looks as though he hit full force maybe he didn't have time to break or maybe there is a reason we will never know. But I disagreed with some of the stories I believe them to be incorrect as they were on the other road where the tree landed. To their families, our sympathy and prayers go out to you. It's sad that we will never know what actually happened. I pray they are with God. Fire

I was actually there when the accident occured on the freeway. I was in the far left lane in the lane to my left a couple of feet ahead was the maroon suv that was involved n the third lane was the truck. The driver must of not been paying attention it slowly drove over to the lane in the and hit the back tire of the maroon car and overturned and at the time I thought ran head on to was a wall but later found to be a tree the truck never stepped on the brakes it was at the speed of 65mph because I was at that speed at the time.u

Has anyone seen any news on the internet about a mutli car accident on CA 91East just before the CA 15 North on ramp on Sat June 30, 2012 at apprxo 5:30pm? There were multiple cars involved and a silver pick up truck went front first off the side of the freeway. I was horrified as it was a big drop off and no guard rail. My prayers are with all but most for the peopel in the pick up truck. Can nto find any news of it at all on the internet
Debra Dingman July 02, 2012 at 07:54 PM
Tammi--you can check the official CHP website. One of the tabs is for "incidents." Hope that helps.

DeDe I am so sorry your exboyfriend was in that truck My prayers are with you I keep thinking that had I not of said stop at the fruit stand we would have been right there when it happened. Then maybe I could have been able to tell you exactly what happened. Just be glad he and the other two did not suffer I will keep you in my prayers also, I can imagine how hard this must be for you, Linda

Tami C. I have been on the internet and watching the papers after we were behind the truck that killed the 3 men, the Budget Rental, but I have not seen anything about the accident you are talking about. If I find anything will let you know, my prayers also go out to those people involved. I can't believe the number of accidents happening, the one in south Sac was horrible I have heard that there are a lot of accidents at that intersection. What are people doing when they get behind the wheel. Scares me, my husband makes a lot of trips to the bay area, I am with him most of the time but when I'm not I worry until he stops and call me to let me know where he is and that he is okay. Linda P.
Linda Pettyplace July 03, 2012 at 06:15 AM
Lindaluv I am with you on the fact that the truck did not leave skids marks as reported, he never applied the brakes the other car they said in the beginning that the driver was okay and just drove off. I would consider that hit and run if that is really what happened. Did you see the other car just drive away as they reported? Linda P.
Linda Pettyplace July 03, 2012 at 06:20 AM
Bernadette my prayers are with you and the sisters of grove phi grove and with the familys of those men, such a waste I couldn't believe it when we were behind them and then pulled off at fruit stand and then saw what had happened my husband & I both said a prayer for whoever was in the truck. We were behind so we couldn't see how many were there. So sorry for your loss Linda P.
