CHP: Triple-Fatal Accident Caused When Moving Truck Hit Car

Two victims were from Sacramento, CHP officers said.

A moving truck crashed into a tree off eastbound I-80 near Davis Friday, killing three people and slowing traffic all the way to Dixon.

The Yolo County Coroner's Office has not yet identified the victims, but California Highway Patrol officers on the scene said two of them were from Sacramento.

The Richards Blvd ramps were closed briefly as CHP officers cleared the scene.

The Budget rental truck was traveling in the far-righthand lane just east of Davis when it sideswiped another car in the lane to the left, CHP Officer J. Patton told Davis Patch. It then overcorrected to the right, veered off the road and hit the tree, killing all three people inside.

“It was a pretty straightforward crash. They tried to overcompensate after hitting the car and unfortunately ended up hitting the tree," Patton said.

Witnesses said the truck had swerved into the other car's lane, Patton reported. No one in the other car was injured, according to the CHP.

The empty moving truck was being towed from the scene and a stretch of Research Park Drive adjacent to the freeway remained closed as of about 2:00 p.m. Traffic was moving again on I-80, but slowly.
