Yolo County Sheriff's deputies have made an arrest in the case of a brutal stabbing that took place in rural Yolo County on October 1. The victim, Mark Cullen of Arbuckle, had been found severely stabbed on the side of the road near Dunnigan.
He survived the attack and was able to lead police to Danny Joe Stearman, 64, who was arrested on October 9.

After 49-year-old Mark Cullen of Arbuckle did not show up for his scheduled midnight shift at Adams Vegetable Oils Inc., in Colusa County, a co-worker called Cullen’s cell phone. Cullen was able to answer his cell phone and told the co-worker he was dying and that he was on County Line Road (near Dunnigan). The co-worker drove Cullen’s usual route to work and located Cullen lying on the side of County Line Road. Cullen had stabs wounds to his upper body and head. Cullen’s vehicle was missing from the scene. Yolo County Sheriff deputies located Cullen’s vehicle on County Rd. 99W, south of County Line Road.
Cullen was airlifted to an area hospital where he is listed as being in critical condition.
The Yolo County Sheriff's Department released the following on October 31, about two weeks after Sterman was arrested:
On October 9th 2012, at 8:20 a.m., Yolo County Sheriff’s Detectives along with police officers from Schafter Police Department arrested 64 year-old Danny Joe Stearman for the stabbing and shooting of Mark Cullen on October 1st 2012. The arrest took place in Schafter, CA where Stearman resides.
After obtaining the victim, Mark Cullen’s medical records, detectives were able to confirm that Cullen had been shot. After Cullen regained consciousness he has able to communicate through handwriting and eventually was able to talk to detectives.
Based on the information detectives gathered through their investigation, a Ramey warrant was obtained for Danny Stearman’s arrest for the attempted homicide of Cullen and a search warrant was issued for his residence and vehicles. Yolo County Sheriff’s detectives searched Stearman’s residence and his vehicle’s pursuant to the search warrant.
Tuesday morning, October 9th, detectives observed Stearman leave his residence in a vehicle. Officers from Schafter Police Department stopped the vehicle and Stearman was arrested without incident. He was later transported to the Yolo County Jail where he was booked on the attempted homicide charge. There is no bail amount set for his release.
On October 30, 2012, Danny Stearman was arraigned on charges of conspiracy, attempted murder, assault with a firearm and assault with a weapon other than a firearm.
