While CHP is still exploring the specifics of the accidents, they want locals to know that the roads will be especially dangerous this whole week, with increased travel expected on both weekends, as well as during the Forth of July holiday.

“Lots of people will be in heavy traffic,” said CHP Officer Bryan Konvalin. “We’re asking that you drive at a safe speed so that you’ll be able to stop in case of an emergency.”

Konvalin and the CHP wanted to share the following with folks who plan to be on the road this week:

  • July 3 and 4 are maximum enforcement days. Every available officer will be out on the road enforcing the law to the fullest extent.
  • It’s a holiday weekend. If you're going to go out and drink, have a designated driver. You could end up in jail or seriously injured, or dead.
  • Many families will be traveling, so please minimize distractions in the car. Don't use the cell phone unless absolutely necessary, and always use a hands-free device. Don't get distracted by the radio or other passengers.
  • Drivers won’t be on their normal commutes, so they’ll be unfamiliar with the roads. Be aware and drive cautiously. Slow down, because you don't know what's coming up.
  • Kids have to be 8 years old or 4'9" to be in seat by themselves. Otherwise, they need a carseat or booster seat.
