How Mayor Krovoza Turned from a Dodgers Fan to a Giants Fan

Q&A with Davis Mayor Joe Krovoza about his childhood as a Dodgers fan and how he began rooting for the Giants.

Mayor Joe Krovoza mentioned during a recent council meeting that he was raised a Dodger fan, but made a switch to the Giants later in life. Rather than accuse him of a sports flip-flop, I decided to ask him a few questions about it. Here are his answers:

Well, I was born and raised in Pasadena, California, as were my brother and sister and my mom and my dad. I grew up a Dodger fan driving down the Pasadena Freeway to Chavez Ravine.

How often did you go to games?

I was a baseball kid, not like these Davis soccer kids. I ended up a soccer coach as a parent, but I was a baseball kid. I played a lot of Little League, so I probably got to five or 10 dodger games a year.

Who were your favorite players?

I loved the old teams of Davey Lopes and Bill Russell and Ron Cey at Third Base. I loved the Dodgers growing up. I even loved Tommy Lasorda, which I can’t quite understand now.

When did it all change?

In 1988, I moved north from Pasadena up to the Bay Area. I really didn’t follow baseball for about five years, and then I started locking into the Giants. It was a bit before they moved to Pac Bell, probably in the mid 1990s.

Now I’m a diehard Giants fan, very much to my father’s great disappointment. But now my father has moved up north to Walnut Creek, so we get to continue the rivalry in northern California. He remains steadfast for the Dodgers while I’m hugely delighted with every Giants victory.

Do you still have a soft spot for the Dodgers?

I have no love whatsoever for the Dodgers. Only fond childhood memories of baseball.

What if I accused you of shedding your Dodgers-fan status just as they stopped winning?

Well, the Giants were in the doldrums back then too. Even under Bonds they struggled to get big success. I think it was much more the vibe of being able to go to live baseball and participate in the northern California community that loves the Giants. I’d hate to think of myself as a fair-weather fan.

What do you expect out of the Giants this year?

I think the Beltran trade is exciting. It’s amazing how many injuries they’ve had. I think they’re going to at least get to the NLCS. They have done so well in tight games that I think there’s a good chance that they’ll take it deep into October this year.

Do you want to take this opportunity to make fun of the Dodgers troubles?

Nope. Nope, I still respect them, even though I’m not following them like I used to.
