Library Late Fees: 'Read Off Your Fines' in April

This campaign will target children and young adult library card holders who owe overdue fines for previously returned material.

By Beth Gabor

The Yolo County Library announces the fifth annual Read-off-Your Fines Campaign, held April 6-14.  This campaign will target children and young adult library card holders, age five to 18 years, who are able to read by themselves and who owe overdue fines on their own library card for previously returned material.  Youth will earn a $1.00 credit for each 15 minutes spent reading a book of their choice in the library.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage youth who have been blocked from checking out library materials to once again be able to return and take advantage of the many resources available at the library.  This program encourages youth to take responsibility for their fines by reading passages from their favorite books, or trying out new ones, in exchange for forgiving overdue fines.

“The Read Off Your Fines program is an opportunity for us to encourage young people to return to the library and read for fun to eliminate their fines,” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong.  “This is your library – we don’t want you to miss out on any services.”

The Yolo County Library offers the Read Off Your Fines program at each of the eight branch libraries.  The hours of the Read-Off-Your Fines program will vary so contact your local branch for more information.  For more information on the Yolo County Library system, including specific branch information, visit: www.yolocountylibrary.org.
