"Occupy Wall Street" Spreads to Davis & Sacramento

Many are expected to land in Sacramento on Thursday, and rumblings of a Davis event Friday night are gaining traction online.

What started on September 17 with masses of people flooding into the financial district of New York has now reached northern California. It will officially land in Sacramento on Thursday, and rumblings of a Davis event Friday night are gaining traction.

If you're not aware of what's going on, here's the #OCCUPYWALLSTREET Facebook event page. There's also this, from We are the 99 Percent:

We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we're working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.

It started when people began setting up tents, kitchens and barricades to occupy Wall Street for a few months, according to the Facebook page. “Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices." The general idea is that wealth has become increasingly concentrated among the few at the top while the remaining people (who make up the majority) get the short end. OccupySacto will begin Thursday at 11:30 am at Cesar Chavez Park. Some Davis residents will be in attendance, including one who made the “We are the 99% Buttons” pictured in this article.

An Occupy Davis page has been created (and rapidly edited) on the Wiki. People may be organizing at 6 or 7 pm in on Friday. (I've seen both times online). Heres how to .

Here's a bit from the Wiki:

This is a proposal to Occupy Davis in solidarity with the Wall Street protesters, as other cities are doing. It has literally gone from 263 cities when I started typing earlier to 292.

I have created a Davis Wiki event for this hoping for some discussion. My suggestion is the car park that sits between the big banks on E & F, 3rd & 4th (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Union Bank). Maybe also something on the UCD campus. Soon, this weekend or next? We are the 99%!!!

There is also a Meetup and a Facebook page posted.

We'll continue to cover this as it develops. In the meantime, we'd like to hear your opinions -- for or against -- what's happening right now. Send me your photos at justin.cox@patch.com or call me at .
