POLL: Should California Raise Taxes to Balance the Budget?

A majority of voters favor Gov. Jerry Brown's tax plan, according to a new Field Poll. Do you agree?

Gov. Jerry Brown is pushing hard for voters to help balance California's budget by passing a November ballot proposition raising taxes.

Fifty-four percent of voters surveyed in a recent Field Poll supported the proposal to raise taxes on sales and high-income earners, while 38 percent opposed it.

Voters were evenly split on two other tax proposals. The first, backed by attorney Molly Munger, would temporarily raise income taxes on nearly all Californians and put most of the money towards schools. Another, supported by hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, would raise taxes on out-of-state businesses, with the money split between energy conservation and the state's general fund.

We're curious what Davis Patch readers think about these options. Which tax measure do you support? Or do you oppose them all? Vote in our poll, and tell us your reasons in the comments.

There aren't any spending cuts to make at this point. Our school and public safety and other vital programs are being murdered by the cuts that have already been made.

How high are we going to raise taxes? http://www.caltax.org/research/calrank.html shows where we rank. The big question is... where does all the $ go? all we ever get threatened with cuts is education and public safety but this is only a bit over a third of our budget. http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/year_spending_2012CAbc_13bc1n_50#usgs302 I still see and hear commercials ADVERTISING for people to get on government programs.. free phones for the deaf? that's the states job? they ADVERTISE for people to use it. come on. everything cant a be a priority...

Need to stop cutting budget for education most of all. Cut subsidies, and certain welfare programs. Decrease spending on programs for long term inmates while decriminalizing drug use in the model used in places like Portugal. It will save money and lower drug use. Invest in our youth and not in pampering hardened criminals.

I probably would have voted to increase taxes...but Jerry and the Dems just voted to spend $6 billion in bonds for the High-Speed Train to Nowhere. Meanwhile as a state worker I get ANOTHER 5% pay cut, and the Dems won't even require welfare recipients to look for a job or take job training.

Our Democratic lawmakers need to stop going to the trough every time they
exceed a budget or spend too much. Calif. still has a ton of fat that can be cut instead of raising taxes. If this keeps up, soon there will be an even larger migration of taxpayers and tax paying companies out of the state. A good place to start? State employee benefits. Our huge pension and medical expenses are giving the farm away.
