Should Underage Drinkers Be Allowed to Have Any Amount of Alcohol in Their System?

Officials to discuss a 'Minor Alcohol Preclusion Ordinance' during tonight's meeting of the City-UCD Student Liaison Commission.

Should someone underage be allowed to have any amount of alcohol in their system? That's the question before the City-UCD Student Liaison Commission tonight during it's afternoon meeting.

The ordinance would make it illegal for anyone under 21 to have a level of .01 or above in their system, essentially they would not be able to have any alcohol in their system whatsoever.

The commission is to provide some feedback to the Davis City Council for a future meeting.

The proposed ordinance has drawn some criticism on sites such as Reddit and a Facebook page has sprung up urging people to attend the meeting and speak out against the ordinance.

"The possible consequences of passing the MAP Act are disturbing," reads the Facebook page description against the MAP Ordinance. "For one, students of many races and genders might feel picked out on an unfair premise (PROFILING)...which would divide, isolate, and diminish the strength/unity of the Davis community. Also, if someone's drink were secretly spiked, this person shouldn't fear detainment upon their escape from possible foul play at the party...fears like this would breach the trust, that many community-members have, in city authorities (as well as further resentment for the integrity of police actions, which many people already foster after the pepper-spray incident of 2011). "

The ordinance is designed to curb underage drinking. What are your thoughts about this ?

The meeting takes place today at 4:30 p.m., at the City-UCD Liaison meeting, held at the Community Chambers Conference Room at 23 Russel Boulevard.
