A 45-year-old Solano County man was arrested on two counts of residential burglary last week, according to the Yolo County District Attorney. After dropping his wife off at work in Davis in July of 2011, Jimmy Medel drove around Davis until stopping at a residence on Stanford Place at around 8:00 am.
Here's what happened next, via the DA's Office:
Medel broke the front door open and went through the residence to the garage. The resident of the home, a UCD college student, was on vacation. While she and roommates were away, the resident’s father was doing repairs on the house. A workman who arrived at the house that morning saw Medel walking out of the garage loading items into his dark colored SUV. Medel left with a large number of tools that had been used in the home repairs and stored in the garage.
The following day, Medel again dropped his wife off for work and drove around Davis before stopping at a Baywood Lane residence between 8:00 am and 9:00 am. The residents of this address were away on vacation at the time. Medel went through a gate to the backyard and broke a window to open the garage door. Once inside the garage he entered the house. Medel spent at least an hour rummaging through and ransacking every room in this residence while loading his SUV with the residents’ property. A neighbor saw Medel leaving the residence and was able to give a license plate number and a description of the dark colored SUV to police who apprehended Medel a short distance away from the Baywood residence.
At trial Medel tried to convince jurors that he had admitted both burglaries to police to cover for his son who committed at least one of the burglaries. The jury found Medel guilty of committing both burglaries and then found him not guilty of committing a similar burglary in March 2011.
After the jury reached their verdicts, the Honorable Judge Mock found that the defendant had previously been convicted of two strike offenses for violent crimes and had served one prior prison term. Medel is scheduled to be sentenced on February 21, 2013 in Yolo County Superior Court Department 3 by Judge Mock.
