The "Other" Occupy Camp Gets Warned by Police

The camp in Central Park has been around far longer than the one on the UC Davis campus, although the quad is getting far more attention.

Dec. 2 Update: The , which may soon receive citations from the City of Davis Police Department, is moving their camp back to the north side of Central Park. They'll host a dance party after the move is complete. They posted this on Facebook:

It's moving day again y'all, but this time there's a dance party afterwards! Come help us move to the north end of Central Park, and stay for the festivities afterwards. We will be moving from 10AM-5PM with a party afterwards in the pavilion, so if you can help out please do. If you know a DJ, please get in touch. We also are looking for a dolly, wheelbarrow, boxes, and packing tape.

Original Story: The Occupy campers in may soon get citations if they don’t break down their camp. Police issued them a warning on Thursday.

The Occupy camp in the park has been around far longer than , which is getting all the attention these days. The first Occupy Davis meeting was held on October 7. (). The Quad occupation didn’t start until five weeks later, on Nov. 17.

It just so happens that the UC Davis camp was the very next day. It immediately became the focal point of the movement, both . Although the two camps are in communication, and occupiers spend time at both sites, they identify as separate Occupations, with separate Facebook pages and websites. 

Since the pepper spraying, I've interviewed several people who have referred to the Central Park occupation as the "other" one when asked about the non-UC occupation. 

Here’s the warning to Occupy Davis from Captain Darren Pytel of the City of Davis Police Department: 

The Davis Police Department is pleased you have taken steps to reduce some of the immediate public health and safety issues with the Occupy camp at Central Park. However, as you were previously advised, camping in a park is a . Continued violation of the local ordinance, after advisement to correct the violation, can result in the issuance of citations. We are asking that you adhere to the local ordinance so that more formal corrective action, such as the issuance of a citation, can be avoided. While other immediate violations of state and local laws have been largely corrected, we are asking that Occupy Davis continue to follow all applicable state and local laws so that we may avoid any public health, welfare, and safety issues.

Read about the municipal code for camping. City of Davis police enforcement has been much less aggressive than that of UC Davis. The City even issued a release to avoid confusion. A city councilmember has even to discuss ways to meet the city's concerns while continuing to camp. He also discussed an exit strategy. 

The Captain's recent letter seems to indicate a change of tone on the part of the City. 

Meanwhile, after the aggressive crackdown on campus, authorities over there are now allowing Occupiers to camp in the quad. The campus Occupation is now brimming with daily activity while Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and several .
