Another Bay Area Athlete Suspended for Doping

According to an announcement released earlier to day by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.    

The suspension of Colon without pay is effective immediately.

Colon's suspension comes just one week after the announcement that San Francisco Giants left-fielder also tested positive for testosterone and was handed the same suspension.

A's manager Bob Melvin, a Menlo-Atherton High School graduate, says his focus must remain on the team and the remainder of the season. The A's are currently five games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.

"I have not spoken to Bartolo today. It is what it is. We certainly don't support his actions, said Melvin.

"You go through things over the case of a season. This is one of them. You have to have a short memory. Once you get into the flow of the game it's all about competing. You're seeing people caught, so it's obviously working. That's the best you can do."

"Billy (Beane) spoke to the team and was there as a resource to explain the process. My focus with the team is we have to move on," added Melvin.
