Federal Judge Finds UCD Violated Title IX

In a mixed ruling the judge also found that three women wrestlers didn't face gender discrimination when they were cut from the wrestling team in 2001.

A federal judge in Sacramento ruled Wednesday that athletic officials at the University of California, Davis did not discriminate based on gender when they booted three women from the university’s wrestling team 10 years ago.

The decision, however, wasn’t a complete win for the university.  The judge also found that UC Davis violated Title IX by failing to provide enough athletic choices for women at the time the three women wrestlers were students.

The New York Times reported that the judge will decide later on damages for the plaintiffs. Judge Frank C. Damrell Jr. advised the plaintiffs not to get their hopes up. He said the ruling “would seem to place severe limitations on the damages these plaintiffs may recover.”
