Beating the Heat With Apple Juice, Margaritas, Swimming Pools, Sprinklers & Overtime at the Lab

How some Davis Patch Facebook fans are keeping cool in this heat.

I spent yesterday afternoon working at Mishka's, with plans of meeting one of our readers at 5 p.m. and giving her some Patch swag that she won in our cutest dog contest. I realized at 4:30 that I had forgotten the swag at my home, near 14th and Covell, which induced immediate panic.

I snapped my laptop shut and ran out into the heat in search of my bike. I scanned the locks nearby, but saw nothing. I walked around the block for about 7 minutes with no recollection of where I parked it. And then I remembered that I had eaten lunch at Pluto's earlier in the day. Ding!

I sprinted to Pluto's, hopped on my bike, pedaled north like a madman until I got home, filled a Patch tote bag with water bottles and t-shirts, and then hopped on my bike again. By the time I reached Mishka's to make the hand-off to Ann Carroll (who has the ), I was covered in sweat and breathing heavily.

I gave Ann her swag and took a moment to pet her cute dog and meet her husband. When we said goodbye, I (almost instinctively) walked toward the Gap to spend a few minutes shopping for some new swimming trunks (aka: take refuge under an air conditioner for five minutes).

Once I was dry, I took a walk to the farmers market, bought a corndog and a frozen half-gallon of apple juice, collapsed in a shaded patch of grass and drifted off into heaven.

I then rode my bike home, changed into (an old pair of non-Gap) swimming trunks) and jumped into my aprarment pool repeatedly.

That's my beat-the-heat story from Yesterday. Here's what six Davis Patch Facebookers said they were doing. (Like our page on Facebook to be a part of the conversation).

  • Allie Prather: Sitting in the pool drinking blended strawberry margaritas.
  • Julie Levie Bower: Working longer hours in the lab here on campus....these buildings are super air conditioned! And then swimming at Manor Pool with my kiddo afterward.
  • Jesse Loren: Did yard work chores at 5:30 am, finished 7:30, stayed indoors, brought bunny in, made sure bees had water source, making frozen yogurt for family soon, then out to the pool.
  • Tiffanie Lai: Lifeguarding the pools and teaching swim & CPR / first aid lessons! Someone has to keep their cool and call rules in this heat...and go off the slide during our breaks. :)
  • Joey Guerrero: I've been digging a swimming hole in my backyard, and slowly and secretly been steeling water bottles full of tap water from you and John's house, Soon I will have a swimming pool paid for by you guys... sooooon. (Editor's Note: I know this guy. He's not coming near my tap water).
  • Karen Kane: Sitting on deck with sprinkler on my legs.
