Art Shapiro

Usually wearing a faded hoodie sweatshirt, jeans and Converse basketball shoes, Professor Art Shapiro, except for his thick white beard, does not look out of place among most students walking around the UC Davis campus. Known as "The Butterfly Man," Prof. Shapiro is a recognized authority on <b><i>Lepidoptera, </i></b>as butterflies are scientifically known. He is nationally recognized for having compiled the largest database on butterfly sightings (based on his personal visits to sites around Northern California) in the western U.S.  He also sponsors an annual contest, awarding a pitcher of beer to the first person who catches a cabbage white butterfly each year.<b><i><br></i></b>
