Located at the eastern end of County Road 28H beside the Davis Wetlands, the wastewater treatment plant was constructed in 1970. The plant is capable of treating 7.5 MGD (million gallons per day) and a peak wet weather flow of 12.6 MGD of wastewater. The wastewater is subjected to a number of treatment processes including "overland flow." In this particular process, the wastewater is pumped overland across vegetated soil surfaces; micro-organisms in the soil perform the actual treatment. The treated water ultimately flows into the wetlands, which have become an attractive habitat for many species of wildlife.
