The eclipse starts around 5:16 p.m. Peak viewing time is 6:33 p.m. Don't risk eye damage: Never look straight at the sun.
With a big event like the annular solar eclipse coming up Sunday, we'd like to know where you'll be going to view the event. The full eclipse won't be visible in Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area, but you will be able to see it partially. So, where will you be going to watch? Let us know below! Here are some safe-viewing tips form the Explorit Science Center: Never look at the sun or a solar eclipse with the naked eye or with any optical device, such as binoculars or a telescope - this will cause permanent damage to your eyes and even blindness. Only telescopes with special filters and proper placement of filters can be used to view the sun. For more information regarding the Sunday, May 20 partial/annular eclipse, or meeting …

Today is Davis Merchants Appreciation Day.
Nina Gatewood Our Downtown Merchants have been very supportive of our school through generous auction donations. Through this difficult economy, many are feeling the pinch (or worse) and could really benefit from our support in return. To that end, we have declared this Sunday, 5/20 Downtown Davis Merchants Appreciation Day. Simply put, if you have shopping that can be done in downtown, we'd like to show our collective support for our downtown businesses through a flurry of Fairfield shoppers downtown on Sunday. We'll kick the day off with a family picnic @ Central park @ noon for anyone who'd like to join their fairfield friends. Need to pick up a birthday or anniversary gift? Consider nestware, Teach Your Children or DeLuna's …
Davis High School has created 78 yearbooks. Will there be a 79th?
UPDATE: Davis High School's yearbook class has been reinstated, according to the Davis Enterprise. The class was cancelled in early May along with others that had low enrollment (less than 25 students). From the moment the class was cancelled (with plans of being replaced as a club), yearbook students began recruiting. See how many students they now have in the Enterprise and read about the cancellation below. ORIGINAL STORY: Many Davis High courses with enrollment below 35 students were cut at last week’s school board meeting. Among them was the Yearbook class. The board, which is saddled with the difficult task of cutting expenses by $3.5 million, also cut other low-enrollment classes like Chinese, German and more. The Yearbook class …

Police have not noticed any patters. Do you have information?
The Davis Police Department released the following note on Facebook Friday afternoon: "Over the last two weeks, we have received 6 reports of gasoline theft. The latest two were reported between May 14th and May 15th. 12 gallons were siphoned from a vehicle on San Thomas and an unknown amount of gasoline was taken from a van on County Road 32A. So far we have not noticed any patterns in locations or vehicles targeted." Do you know anything about these incidents in Davis? Is it possible you've been targeted?
"The feeling is that the school board is being very disrespectful to the teachers," one reader said.
I wasn't able to cover Wednesday night's school board meeting, but the Davis Enterprise reported that "restive Davis teachers, upset at a proposal to cut their salary by 5 percent, disrupted Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting by turning their backs while the superintendent spoke and loudly clapping to drown out other speakers." I received an email Thursday from a teacher in the district who elaborated on why the teachers turned their backs during the meeting. According to Dana Sodergren, here's why they did it: "The major issue that was not mentioned [in the Enterprise article] was the reason the teachers turned their backs. The established agenda of board meetings is public comment first. The board suddenly decided to move public …
Celebrate Davis! ended with a five-minute fireworks show yesterday. Here's a sped-up version.
I shot this video on my GoPro camera while breaking down the Davis Patch booth at Celebrate Davis! yesteray. The event was great and the fireworks show was a nice way to end it. The music in the video is something I recorded a couple of years ago using a guitar and some GarageBand loops. It's a bit scattered and crazy. For more local videos:
This kid won't be able to vote for many years. For now, he lets his arm do the talking.
Many local public figures were invited to participate in a dunk tank at Celebrate Davis! yesterday. Among them were the five city council candidates. While I spent most of the day working the Davis Patch booth, I took a quick stroll around the park to snap some photos. I showed up at the dunk tank just in time to watch candidate Lucas Frerichs get dunked by a kid with an impressively accurate arm. Here's our full City Council election guide. (This is the only story about dunk tanks, I promise). To follow the eletion:
