Today is Davis Merchants Appreciation Day.
Nina Gatewood Our Downtown Merchants have been very supportive of our school through generous auction donations. Through this difficult economy, many are feeling the pinch (or worse) and could really benefit from our support in return. To that end, we have declared this Sunday, 5/20 Downtown Davis Merchants Appreciation Day. Simply put, if you have shopping that can be done in downtown, we'd like to show our collective support for our downtown businesses through a flurry of Fairfield shoppers downtown on Sunday. We'll kick the day off with a family picnic @ Central park @ noon for anyone who'd like to join their fairfield friends. Need to pick up a birthday or anniversary gift? Consider nestware, Teach Your Children or DeLuna's …
Davis High School has created 78 yearbooks. Will there be a 79th?
UPDATE: Davis High School's yearbook class has been reinstated, according to the Davis Enterprise. The class was cancelled in early May along with others that had low enrollment (less than 25 students). From the moment the class was cancelled (with plans of being replaced as a club), yearbook students began recruiting. See how many students they now have in the Enterprise and read about the cancellation below. ORIGINAL STORY: Many Davis High courses with enrollment below 35 students were cut at last week’s school board meeting. Among them was the Yearbook class. The board, which is saddled with the difficult task of cutting expenses by $3.5 million, also cut other low-enrollment classes like Chinese, German and more. The Yearbook class …

"The feeling is that the school board is being very disrespectful to the teachers," one reader said.
I wasn't able to cover Wednesday night's school board meeting, but the Davis Enterprise reported that "restive Davis teachers, upset at a proposal to cut their salary by 5 percent, disrupted Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting by turning their backs while the superintendent spoke and loudly clapping to drown out other speakers." I received an email Thursday from a teacher in the district who elaborated on why the teachers turned their backs during the meeting. According to Dana Sodergren, here's why they did it: "The major issue that was not mentioned [in the Enterprise article] was the reason the teachers turned their backs. The established agenda of board meetings is public comment first. The board suddenly decided to move public …

West Village is one of four case studies featured in the current issue of the journal Planning Theory & Practice.
UCD News Service UC Davis West Village overcame funding constraints, delays, regulatory changes, a housing market collapse and other challenges to become the nation’s largest planned zero-net energy community, according to a new report on sustainable, low-carbon developments. The pioneering development is one of four case studies featured in the current issue of the journal Planning Theory & Practice. The report, “Exploring the Challenges of Environmental Planning and Green Design: Cases from Europe and the USA,” highlights UC Davis West Village as a model for new town construction and an example of how progressive planning and creative partnering can lead to new possibilities in energy conservation. The UC Davis case study was selected …
"If [Elizabeth Stadler Simoons] had known that the Davis branch of her day would become the Mary L. Stephens Library, Liz would have wanted the books to go there, a library dedicated to someone she greatly admired."
By Beth Gabor The Yolo County Library is honored to accept a generous $40,000 donation from Frederick J. Simoons in memory of his wife, and former Yolo County Library branch manager and assistance county librarian, Elizabeth Stadler Simoons. The donation will be used to enhance the Mary L. If you attend the meeting, please email your thoughts to justin.cox@patch.com or comment below this story.
Before the last school board meeting, teachers and community members marched through downtown with picket signs in opposition to various proposed budget cuts. During the meeting that followed, many classes -- including foreign languages and yearbook class -- were cut. Davis Patch has received multiple emails and had spoken with several teachers since those decisions -- aimed at cutting $3.5 million from the budget -- came down. There has also been talk of salary cuts. Teachers are expected to show up again tonight to voice their opinion about the cuts. I won't be able to attend the meeting. If you're there, please feel free to email me your thoughts at justin.cox@patch.com so I can follow up on the story. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at …
"...UC will no longer be held accountable for its priorities in the use of any of its resources (public or private) — and especially for making it a priority to educate Californians."
Shortly after Gov. Jerry Brown presented his latest budget proposals, which he says will slash $8.3 billion from government spending to close a $15.7 billion deficit, UC faculty delivered a bold response. The Council for UC Faculty Associations is an umbrella association that binds the faculty associations on each UC Campus. They posted the following on their website the day after Brown's announcement. Some have suggested that the UC is headed down a road toward privatization. What do you think? UC President Mark Yudof and Governor Jerry Brown are working out a deal behind closed doors that will loosen the most important ties between the university and the state. Although they will both praise the deal by saying that it “stabilizes” …

Rhett & Link stopped by the Whole Earth Festival a while back and made the following video.
I received an email this week from Colin of the band Tha Dirt Feelin, in which he included the video above. "...This is from a few years ago when YouTube stars Rhett & Link did a show about Whole Earth," Colin wrote in the email. Colin is the guy playing the ukulele at about the 30 second mark of the video. You can hear the full song, "Lazy Afternoon," here. He was in the process of writing it while Rhett & Link shot their video. What do you think of the video? Funny, or not? Let us know below!
